January 25, 2021 WINTER MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

PYSA Families:
Welcome to 2021! We hope your year is off to a wonderful start. Needless to say, the PYSA is thrilled to turn the page on 2020 and we are excited about the upcoming soccer season. Most notably, the PYSA is celebrating our 40th Anniversary this year and we are hoping to commemorate this milestone throughout the season and also have a club-wide soccerfest in August to celebrate. Thanks to the foresight and passion of our founding families the PYSA was an early member of the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) and the first community in Northern Michigan to have organized soccer. Over the years the club has positively impacted thousands of families while evolving from borrowing a dusty field at the fairgrounds to owning and developing one of the nicest multi-field complexes in the Midwest. Here is a quick update on what to expect over the next few months.

Winter Training Opportunities
The PYSA is an affiliated league of MSYSA. To maintain our membership status we must comply with all MSYSA rules and regulations. In accordance with the most recent Michigan Department of Health and Human Services guidelines, the MSYSA is currently not allowing any indoor team activities (practices, scrimmages, or games) through February 21. The MSYSA is hoping that youth soccer becomes less restrictive later in February. The PYSA is planning on holding indoor practices for a few weeks leading up to spring break and for a couple of weeks after spring break at NCMC for those families comfortable with participating. These sessions are tentative pending MSYSA guidance and NCMC's willingness and ability to host. We will provide another update in mid-February. In the meantime, families looking for opportunities this winter can check out the individual training videos at petoskeysoccer.com or contact the Petoskey Fieldhouse at petoskeyfieldhouse.com for complete details on their winter indoor programming.

Spring Season
The PYSA is planning on a full spring outdoor season starting as soon as Click Rd. is ready in April. While the public health situation continues to improve in Michigan we anticipate that the MSYSA COVID protocols from the fall will carry over to the spring season. Registration is open for the PYSA's Fresh Coast Classic Tournament June 4-6, but it is still way too early to know if we will be allowed to host a regular tournament, only be allowed a limited number of teams/spectators, or be forced to cancel again. Our tournaments provide our players with top-level competition from around the state while proving an economic boon to the local business community. We are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to host the June tournament.

Current PYSA Financial Situation
2020 was a tough year for many community-based small businesses and nonprofits. Youth sports organizations around the country were particularly hard hit. The PYSA's major fundraisers are our tournaments so having those cancelled created a budget deficit for 2020. Thankfully the PYSA remains in a very strong financial position as a result of 10+ years of budget surpluses and the various grants and pandemic stimulus programs at the local, state, and federal levels we were able to tap into. Also, many of you made generous tax-deductible donations to the PYSA which helped narrow the deficit for 2020. The PYSA is well-positioned to continue to thrive for another 40 years!

2021 PYSA Staff
Christine Webster continues to serve as the PYSA's Executive Director and Ashley Antonishen continues in her role as Director of Coaching. Both Christine and Ashley skillfully and successfully navigated the PYSA through the most challenging year imaginable. Congratulations to Ashley and her husband on the birth of their daughter in December!

We are currently without an Academy Director as Pete Platte resigned after multiple operations on his achilles which will dramatically limit his mobility for the next year. We would like to thank Pete for his 10+ years of commitment and service to the organization. He has had a direct impact on almost every player in our club with his unwavering enthusiasm for teaching the game.
